Nathaniel Music Club
So you've got a couple of gigs done, and the band is feeling pretty good. What's the next big step? Or maybe you're just starting to put a band together, and you need a big push right up front to get you on your feet and moving. Then again, maybe you've been away from music for a while and you'd really like a group that hangs out every weekend, learns more about music and does a jam every so often.
This is where it all goes down. Nathaniel's Music Club addresses the biggest concern of every new and continuing musician: sustainability. How do you keep it going, if you're not taking classes or can't seem to organise a regular jam? How do you find more gigs to play? How do you get more people to listen? How do you put more into your compositions?
Music is inherently social, and the answer to all those questions, is you play with other people.
There will be 4 activities each month on the 4 Saturdays we have available. Preferred timings are between 2-5 pm but subject to minor change. Workshops will happen for durations ranging from 1.5-3 hours depending on the subject matter.
Any student who is interested in music is free to be part of the Nathaniel Music Club.
Each month's activities will be divided into 3 categories as follows:
Here after a poll, we discuss a topic which we each agree to learn over the session.
Faculty will be established musicians in and around the country and beyond.
Examples:
- How Indian music blends with Western music and vice-versa
- Composing harmony in quick and effective ways
- Making money with music and steps to promote yourself as an artist
- The advantages of Reading Rhythms
- Steps taken to learn a song (Given prior notice of course)
- The Blues
- The feeling of resolution
- The essential skills of song-writing
- How to make steps jamming with your band
- Recording and producing your music
- Understanding the role of instruments we don't get to learn regularly (Eg.Trumpet and Flute)
We take music which inspires us and pick a few genres, artists and songs to discuss over a session understanding their background, musical skills and more.
Again, subject to availability, we get down guest faculty specifically to take these topics.
Cases:
- Traditionally used musical progressions
- What goes on in a Queen song?
- How people make 4/4 interesting
- The uncountable music of “Riverdance”
- Rock n Roll with all of them
- Bradenburg Concerto and it’s mystery
- We actually get down a known artist/band and they walk us through their music over tea
At the end of each month, you will have to present material which you have used over the various discussions to the club. The main aim is for you to see constant growth in your musical ability over the month
In this session, we discuss our own musical ideas and doubts which will all be kept in an idea pool maintained over approximately a month.
Software will be used for this purpose to collaborate and document the progress.
Cases:
- Someone jams for about half an hour and mails all of you an idea. We can then discuss that on various angles in the class (Harmony, Theory, Arrangement and so on). Who knows, we can even collaborate and help each other in the process.
- Someone can bring a melody and we can discuss adding harmony to it
- We could fine tune your guitar solo for a certain song
- If you have any tech related doubt like connecting your keyboard, getting a bass to cut through in the mix, adding effects to vocals etc..
- Compose a bass line for a song given all the other instruments
- Adding a vocal line to a part given a set of lyrics and chordal framework
Features of the club:
