Eight questions from Nathaniel School of Music, Bangalore — two on music theory, two on ear training, and one each on chords, reading staff notation, Indian music and rhythm. Every listening question is played on a real piano and every notation question is properly engraved. It takes about three minutes, there is no sign-up, and it is free.

What it measures

• Music theory — intervals, key signatures, scales and modes
• Ear training — pitch, chord quality and direction
• Chords and harmony — triads, sevenths, inversions and ii-V-I
• Reading staff notation — pitch, rhythm, clefs and key signatures
• Indian music — sargam, tala, raga and the tanpura drone
• Rhythm — time signatures, note values, swing and syncopation

You get a level and a profile showing where you are strong and where you are thin — not just a score. There is no audition at Nathaniel School of Music and no wrong place to start.
